Nicolás Gallo, the referee of the match, did not replace a second in the second half. He preferred that everything end, that the two teams that were on the Techo field go to rest. The local, La Equidad, equaled its worst defeat in the first division, in the game in which the passage to the League final was played, even depending on others.
The winner left, at least, with dignity. Medellín thrashed Alexis García’s team 1-5, but could not qualify either. They needed Tolima and Hernán Torres’ team to lose, although they suffered, they won and will be Nacional’s rival in the League final.
The game got complicated for La Equidad, entry: after three minutes, referee Nicolás Gallo kicked out goalkeeper Washington Ortega. The Uruguayan came out to cut an advance by Diber Cambindo outside the area and ended up putting his hand on the ball: expulsion sung.
Alexis García, the technician of La Equidad, played it. Normally, the sacrificed in these cases is an attack man. But there was an obligation to win. For this reason, the one who left the field for the entrance of Sergio Román was a recovery man, Juan Alejandro Mahecha.
And from the collection of that foul, Medellín went ahead. Andrés Cadavid kicked the free kick very hard, burning Román’s hands, who rebounded, and Adrián Arregui put his head into the ball to put it in the local goal. The goal went up to the scoreboard with suspense, because the VAR reviewed a possible offside that did not exist. The DIM was excited about the final, but had to wait for what happened in Ibagué.
Equity felt the blow. And Medellín found the second goal, with the locals playing attack, with many spaces for them to hurt. A pitch from Arregui left Juan David Mosquera hand in hand with Román. He had time to think, elude the goalkeeper and finish with class.
And if La Equidad lacked something for the night to come at all, it was a penalty sanctioned by the VAR: Daniel Polanco put his arm in Felipe Pardo’s face, not with great force, but enough so that he screens will be detected. Arregui left Román without an option and scored the 0-3, in the third minute of substitution of the first stage. There were still 45 minutes of suffering left…
Equity reacted in the second stage. And a penalty gave him the opportunity to close the gap, at 12 minutes, when Cadavid took Yoiver González ahead, who had entered the interval. Pablo Sabbag turned it into a goal and, at least, received the prize for the best intention of his team after the break.
But it was just a mirage. Medellín put the game back in scoring mode when Felipe Pardo, at 34 minutes, put the ball between goalkeeper Román and the post to score 1-4. The result itself was assured. But at that time he needed two goals from Envigado in Ibagué.
Medellin already decided to leave a good image and if he was given the defeat of Tolima, then it was a gain. Mosquera, at 39 minutes into the second half, scored another great goal, in a move very similar to his first goal, although this time, instead of eluding the goalkeeper, he hit it from above.
Equity ended his dream in the worst way. And Medellín, who pointed everything to the League and ruled out the South American, was left empty-handed.
