Nick takes Australia back to the penultimate act of a Major after 17 years, from Hewitt 2005. Now he awaits the winner between Nadal and Fritz
Nick Kyrgios’ tale continues. Among the four players who will compete for the 135th edition of Wimbledon there is also the Australian who beat Chilean Cristian Garin in three sets (6-4 6-3 7-6 in 2 hours and 13 minutes) and on Friday he will be the protagonist of the semi-final of the lower part of the board, the one that will see him opposed to the winner of the challenge in progress between the Spanish Rafael Nadal and the American Taylor Fritz. If there is always little to say about the all-out game, and about the spectacular shots expressed by the Australian, it is often his attitude and his sudden drops in tension that lead him to completely estrange himself from the match.
Difficult debut
–
Today the start was anything but encouraging, because Kyrgios lost the first round to zero, thanks to two free forehand mistakes, a winning response and a backhand pass from Garin. The Chilean, who won the first 9 points of the match, but held the lead only up to 3-2, then when he served in the sixth game to climb 4-2, he made 3 forehand and 2 backhand errors , allowing the Australian to recover the break. On 4 all Kyrgios saved two break points and in the tenth game he took home the first fraction, snatching the serve from his rival. Concentrated, unwilling to waste unnecessary energy for the usual monologues, Kyrgios continued to grind his game head down and in the fourth game of the second set he again snatched the bar from his rival to go up 3-1. The Australian successfully faced three break points, two at 3-1 and one at 4-2 and then at 5-3 he closed the set with the eleventh ace of the match, advancing 2 sets to zero.
Risky ending
–
In the third set Kyrgios saved three break points under 2-3 and then dragged himself to the tiebreaker. In the decisive game Kyrgios was ahead 3-1, he was made up for by Garin who went up 5-3, but the last four points of the match were for the Australian. At goal Kyrgios earned the match point that he transformed when Garin’s last backhand ended up in the corridor. The Australian finished with 17 aces, 4 double fouls, 69% of firsts, 35 winners, 29 free and 14 points won in 24 runs to the net. Nick Kyrgios is the first Australian to reach the semi-finals at Wimbledon since 2005 when Lleyton Hewitt lost in three sets to Roger Federer. Hewitt was also the last Australian to reach the semi-finals in a Grand Slam: at the US Open 2005, still beaten by Federer. In the current tournament Kyrgios is the first for the number of aces (119 against Isner’s 113).
