Kylian Mbappé has admitted that it was not an easy decision to snub the interest of the real Madrid in 2022.
Two years ago, Mbappé allowed his contract with Paris Saint-Germain to run out and was expected to sign with Madrid, only to make a spectacular 180-degree turn and sign a bumper new deal with the French giants.
The immediate fallout sparked speculation that Mbappé’s actions would cost him a future move to Madrid, although the Spanish side are now expected to secure his signature this summer after the French striker confirmed he will leave PSG this summer.
When asked to explain why he rejected Madrid’s first approach, Mbappé said to CNN : “It was more than just staying at PSG. It was the World Cup in Qatar. There were a lot of things around these things. It was a great decision, a difficult decision.” ..but I don’t regret anything.
“Of course, in a career you have to make difficult decisions and that’s what I did, but I became the top scorer of all time with PSG. I just want to remember the best things. It was not an easy situation and I wish no one to live that.”
Mbappé’s next move is yet to be announced, but he recently highlighted that fans will learn the identity of his new club in the coming days.
Madrid’s plan is to confirm Mbappé’s arrival before Euro 2024 and is legally authorized to do so, despite the fact that his contract with PSG does not formally expire until June 30.
However, behind the scenes, reports claim that Mbappé is embroiled in a legal battle with PSG over the final payment of his salary.
PSG are claimed to still owe Mbappe €80m (€72m in unpaid wages and an €8m loyalty bonus), with club officials insisting Madrid should contribute to the sum.
