The head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, said on Tuesday, March 22, that telephone conversations between Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky and President of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) Xi Jinping are expected in Kyiv.
“We are waiting for a conversation between Vladimir Zelensky and Xi Jinping,” he wrote on Twitter.
Earlier, on March 18, US President Joe Biden and Xi Jinping held telephone conversations, during which the situation in Ukraine and Donbass was considered. During the conversation, Xi Jinping pointed to the impasse in relations between the US and China, which was firmly established by the previous administration of US President Donald Trump.
In addition, he outlined China’s position on Moscow’s special operation to protect Donbass, noting that “the crisis in Ukraine is not what China would like to see.” He also stressed that interstate relations “should not develop into a situation where the parties begin to use weapons against each other.”
As Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi explained, the position of the chairman on the situation around Ukraine is based on the fact that in order to resolve the crisis and ensure stability on the European continent, it is necessary to abandon the Cold War mentality, bloc confrontation, and in practice form a balanced, effective and sustainable architecture of the regional security.
On the same day, the American publication Politico pointed out that Xi Jinping, after negotiations with Biden, stepped up his course towards rapprochement with Russia. The material noted that the conversation between the leaders showed a split between their positions regarding the special operation carried out by Russia to protect Donbass.
In mid-February, due to the aggravation of the situation in the Donbass as a result of shelling by the Ukrainian military, the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics announced the evacuation of the civilian population to the Russian Federation and asked for recognition of independence. On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a corresponding decree.
On February 24, Russia launched a special operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass. As the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov clarified, the special operation has two goals – the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine. According to him, both of these aspects pose a threat to the Russian state and people.
