After more than seventy years, KWF Kankerbestrijding will no longer use the collection box during the next collection week. During the first full week of September, collectors will be door-to-door with a QR code that people can scan with their phone to transfer money. “By switching to fully digital, we are in line with the trends in payments and we are preparing the collection for the future,” says Linda Sumner, spokesperson for the KWF.
Due to the advance of electronic payment, people will have less cash at home in 2022. The advantage of digital collection is that it is no longer necessary to deposit cash at the bank, because that is possible in fewer and fewer places and is becoming more and more expensive, according to KWF. “Just like via the collection box, a donation via QR is one-time, safe and anonymous. No data is kept. Collectors no longer have to carry money around; every QR gift is immediately credited to the KWF account.”
During the corona period, KWF Kankerbestrijding, like some other charitable organizations, gained experience with digital collection. Other organizations later partially use the collection box, so KWF will stop there. During a trial in 2021, KWF collected digitally in 24 cities such as Leeuwarden, Zeist and Rotterdam. At that time, 36,000 euros was raised in Rotterdam.
That is more than the years before. In 2020, the proceeds in Rotterdam (with cash and digital donations) were 21,500 euros. In 1950 almost half a million guilders was raised in seven hundred municipalities, last year about 80,000 volunteers set out and a total of almost 5.9 million euros was collected.
KWF Kankerbestrijding has been going past the houses with the collection box since 1950. At first it was made of tin, later made of plastic. Money could also be put in collection bags and a contribution could also be donated via text message or debit card. KWF has always been at the forefront with innovative ways of collecting, says Sumner. “The QR code was introduced in 2018. This turned out to be a breakthrough that was quickly embraced by all charities and donors. Now, after four years, it is time for the next step: 100 percent QR.”
