The Kremlin said on Tuesday (24) that the war in Ukraine will only end when Russia achieves its goals, in response to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s statement that the end of the conflict is near.
“Every war ends, one way or another, with peace. But for us there is no other option but to achieve the set goals,” presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a daily news briefing.
Peskov added that “as soon as these goals are achieved in one way or another, the special military operation will be terminated.”
In an interview with the American press, Zelensky said: “We are closer to peace than we think.”
The Ukrainian leader stressed that Ukraine must be “very strong” and force Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, who is reportedly “very concerned” about the current presence of Ukrainian troops in the Kursk border region, to stop the war.
The Kremlin said on Monday it was ready to “carefully study” the “Victory Plan” that Zelensky will present this week during his trip to the United States.
According to the press, the plan includes security guarantees; an economic assistance program; a commitment to future arms supplies, including long-range missiles; and diplomatic pressure on Russia to agree to negotiate a peaceful solution to the conflict.
Zelensky also called in his speech at the plenary session of the Future Summit at UN headquarters in New York for mass attendance at the meeting he is preparing to increase international pressure on Russia.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova assured that the country, for now, will not participate in any peace summit for Ukraine based on the formula proposed by the Ukrainian president.
However, Zakharova said that Russia does not reject “a political-diplomatic solution to the crisis” based on the conditions set in mid-June by Putin.
At the time, he proposed that Kiev withdraw its troops from the four regions annexed by Moscow (Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia) and renounce plans to join NATO in exchange for an immediate ceasefire and the start of peace negotiations.
