In the period between the end of the 2021 World Cup and the beginning of what is about to start – on the weekend of March 20 in Bahrain – theAston Martin has faced certain first-tier changes within its staff, with the English team preparing for a 2022 full of great news: in addition to the project of a cutting-edge district, almost ready and created exclusively ad hoc for Formula 1 , there was no shortage of significant new entries such as those of Martin Whitmarsh in the role of CEO, as well as Eric Blandin as aerodynamic leader. Now, after the departure of Otmar Szafnauer, destined for the Alpine, the assignment of team principal of the team passed to the 49-year-old from Luxembourg Mike Krack. The engineer, who already boasts a past in the top series in BMW Sauber in the early 2000s, is now ready to make the great comeback in the Circus, finding Sebastian Vettel as a starting driver, contrary to the period in which he met him as a test driver for the Swiss team, ‘accompanying’ him to his official debut in 2006. Speaking of the German number 5, Krack expressed what will be some of the team’s general objectives in a press conference reserved for some media, in which he also participated FormulaPassion.it: “It is clear that a boy like Sebastian, a four-time world champion, does not want to be fifteenth, twelfth or eighth – has explained – and it will be our task to deliver a high-performance machine to him, or at least a performing structure, because I think Sebastian is a smart guy. He won’t just focus on this year’s car or anything else, but mostly on what’s happening, and whether he sees the potential. I’m sure we will convince him to stay beyond 2022 “.
In addition to these considerations on Vettel, the Luxembourg manager has reserved a comparison between his F1, in which he remained until 2008, and the one currently in force under the control of Liberty Media: “I think what happened with Liberty is very positive – added Krack – In recent years, the audience following F1 has increased significantly and in large part this is thanks to Liberty Media. To be honest with you, this F1 is not comparable to the one I left behind. Everything has evolved a lot, and even a year in F1 is an eternity. When you look back on old 2009 or 2010 GPs, it’s not just the cars that look old-fashioned, but the whole system as well. I believe Liberty has already achieved great goals, and I think there will be others. Progress has also been made in the show, which is more oriented to the wishes of the viewer ”.
Now, except for the memories and comparisons with the present, Krack will have the task of leading Aston Martin to the top of the F1 standings, trying with a five-year plan that would at least bring the English team to the top of this category: “I think Formula 1 is like the Champions League – he concluded – and every professional footballer wants to play it. And the same goes for engineers or pilots. From this point of view, it is the ultimate place to be. The pressure is there, but I think you need to turn it into positive pressure. We want and must be successful. We spend so much on time and money, and definitely not to finish second or just to participate. Now, of course, you can’t change and be a winner from day one; others have tried and for a long time. It is a huge challenge, but it is also a great opportunity. Furthermore, with the Aston Martin brand, I think we have all the ingredients needed to be successful. We are fast, flexible and can react faster than others, also due to the way we have divided the tasks: in this phase, there is everything we need “.
