For years, Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer was the number one rival of FIFA from EA. However, in recent years this has changed substantially. Electronic Arts lost the FIFA license, while PES switched to eFootball with a free-to-play format. Now, in a move that no one expected, The FIFA organization has entered into an agreement with Konami.
It is important to mention that this new agreement between FIFA and Konami does not mean that the Japanese company is going to be in charge of the games licensed by the football organization, or that eFootball change name. This means that eFootball will be used for this year’s FIFA World Cup on both consoles and mobile devices. In the past EA’s work was used for this event, but considering the rift between these two companies, it was more than obvious that this would no longer be the case.
In this way, everyone competing in the FIFA eSports tournament this year will have to do so with eFootball. Thus, the world football organization still does not reveal which will be the lucky studio that manages to take the reins of the FIFA series. While it was speculated for a while that 2K would obtain the rights, recent statements by Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick cast doubt on this.
In August of this year, Zelnick mentioned that anyone who decides to take on EA Sports FC will have a number of difficult challenges in front of them. Although there is still a possibility that 2K will take the reins of FIFA in the future, It seems that the studio would have a daunting task in front of them, something that could discourage them.
For its part, FIFA has indicated that a new digital football game with its license is already in developmentalthough we still don’t know who has the rights at this time. On related topics, here you can check our review of EA Sports FC 25. Likewise, you can learn more about the new FIFA here.
Author’s Note:
The collaboration between Konami and FIFA could be the beginning of a new era. Although this does not mean that eFootball becomes FIFA, the football organization could help this free-to-play get more teams and leagues, in order to confront the giant that remains EA Sports FC.
