After the campaigns carried out on Indiegogo And Kickstarter, Kokoon released his new ones Kokoon Nightbuds, earphones designed and made specifically for sleeping.
The Kokoon Nightbuds were designed to promote sleep – and relaxation – and exceeded the company’s expectations in launching an inaugural product that was very well received by customers, collecting a large total of € 2,565,468 (£ 677,954 from Kickstarter + £ 1,520,404 from Indiegogo).
At the moment, they are available for purchase on Indiegogo at the price of € 159 (on offer 32%) and include a single Kokoon Nightbuds, a USB Type-C charging cable, a case to carry them with you and 4 pairs of silicone earplugs to adapt to different types of ears.
In addition to this there is also the version with two Kokoon Nightbuds at the price of € 294 (on offer of 37%), called the “couple” version, so as to live the new experience together with your partner.
Winners of the RedDot 2021 and acclaimed by newspapers of the caliber of The Wall Street Journal, VOGUE And Wired, with a thickness of only 6mm are the smallest earphones currently on the market, not to mention the fact that they have been made with a patented system of cables and automatic adjustment that guarantees stability and fit.
The main objective of the company, as I said at the beginning, is to improve the sleep experience, giving you the chance to enjoy your relaxation and make bedtime a moment of joy. This is possible thanks to earphones whose audio dynamically adapts to an individual’s sleep – and relaxation – based on sensor data, in real time.
At the heart of sleep monitoring is the optical heart rate monitoringThis works by illuminating the body and measuring how light is scattered from the bloodstream.
THEl point dwhere this is measured on the body it has a huge impact on the accuracy of the system, for example common but not optimal points I’m the wrist (AppleWatch, FitBit and / or smartwatch in general), the ankles, the fingers (Oura or smart ring), while the forehead and ears are the best points for detection.
Specifications and more details on the Kokoon Nightbuds
As I told you, the Kokoon Nightbuds cheer sleep through audio but, the surprising thing is that you can use any type, it doesn’t have to be the one provided by Kokoon, nor does it have to be the audio designed by the company to help sleep (binaural beats), but you can listen to classical music or a podcast, just like you would with a normal pair of wireless earphones.
The Kokoon Nightbuds are in fact compatible with any audio source, as an example YouTube, Spotify, Calm, Headspace, Apple Music, etc ..; among other things the Kokoon Nightbuds, have a adaptive audio, this means that the latter dynamically adapts to an individual’s sleep and relaxation based on sensor data in real time, giving the right audio at the right time.
Another function present in the Kokoon Nightbuds is the intelligent noise masking and passive noise blocking, technologies that help mask snoring, noisy neighbors, babies, traffic and can help with tinnitus.
But what is noise masking?
Although noise blocking is a physical barrier to noise (like earplugs), noise masking works by introducing another sound, often called white noise.
This sound combines with external noise to cover and attenuate the sound peaks that typically disturb our sleep, our brain is in fact disturbed by sudden changes in sound, thus masking the noise it helps to soften the changes and allows the brain to ignore sounds that might otherwise be an interruption.
Acoustic masking is ideal for protecting sleep as it is effective in masking those sudden sounds (snoring, conversations, babies crying, barking dogs, etc.) that are more likely to disturb sleep.
Active noise cancellation typically struggles with these types of sound due to their unpredictability and frequency.
The acoustic masking of the Kokoon Nightbuds can also be of two types:
- adaptive, where it is introduced slowly as the listener falls asleep, allowing the best protection while allowing the sleeper to enjoy their time, this is because often what works best to mask disturbances is different from what you want to hear too;
- optimized: based on the study of the profile of the sounds that typically disturb sleep, thus optimizing the frequency profile of the masking sound used to offer better protection. The system is also able to react to surrounding noise, for example by increasing the volume and frequency profile of the masking for better protection in real time.
As for the technical specifications, the Kokoon Nightbuds are composed of the two earphones connected to the sensor, which will be positioned behind the head. The earphones have a microphone for voice calls, while on the sensor there are two volume control buttons.
The battery technology is lithium-ion and, with a capacity of 100mAh, they guarantee a battery life of over 14 hours. Also present is Bluetooth 5.0 and a USB-C type charging port, while the optical heart rate sensor will be placed in the part of the headset.
My Kokoon App
Kokoon has developed a brand new app, with its own internal 4D binaural beats soundtracks to help with sleep in different ways. THE binaural beats, depending on the frequency of the signal, they can have different effects, from those that improve mood to those that induce relaxation.
The app is also used to record sleep patterns. In theory, this should allow you to monitor your sleep and see where it needs to improve. The app will suggest ways to get a better night’s rest, as the Nightbuds (via the PPG and an accelerometer) track your pulse and movement throughout the night.
Among the other functions accessible through the app we have the optimization of awakening based on the natural sleep cycles of the body with wake up audio, morning routines and insights, an “AI sleep coach”, that is, develop an understanding of your sleep (behaviors, thoughts, problems) then continuously monitors 6 key sleep parameters providing personalized insights and CBT-I coaching.
