The KNMI has issued code orange for almost the entire country for Friday in connection with the expected storm Eunice. Code yellow only applies to the province of Limburg, it reports weather institute Thursday. The KNMI expects the storm to rage through the Netherlands on Friday with “very strong gusts of wind” from 100 to 120 kilometers per hour. Wind speeds of 130 kilometers per hour can be achieved on the coast and on the Wadden Sea.
The wind can cause “considerable damage” and “very dangerous situations” as a result of “falling trees” and “flying objects”, warns the KNMI. At the end of the evening and into the night to Saturday, the wind from the southwest decreases. Code orange is issued if dangerous or extreme weather is expected with a high risk of damage, injury or a lot of nuisance. The KNMI speaks of a storm if at least wind force nine (75 to 88 kilometers per hour) lasts for one hour. Eunice is the fourth storm this year and the fifth this winter.
On Thursday afternoon, code yellow will apply in parts of the country due to storm Dudley. The highest measured wind speed from storm Dudley was 114 kilometers per hour, at weather station Lauwersoog in the north of Groningen. Later in the afternoon, the strength of the storm will decrease. Eunice is not only expected to have higher wind speeds, but will also be felt further inland.
