Schalke Salif Sané may be out for a longer period of time. The central defender missed the Bundesliga game against VfL Wolfsburg because of a knee injury and should be examined in more detail in the coming week.
As long as he is fit, Salif Sané is a constant at Schalke. In the home game against VfL Wolfsburg, however, S04 coach Manuel Baum has to do without the 30-year-old Senegalese. Rabbi Matondo and Alessandro Schöpf are also not in the squad.
As the club announced on Saturday afternoon, Sané injured himself during the international break. For the Senegal national team, the 1.96 meter tall defense tower was used in both Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea-Bissau, although it was only substituted in for stoppage time in the second leg.
According to the club, Sané suffered a knee injury, and an investigation in the coming week should provide more information. In his place, Malick Thiaw will move to the defense center and begin alongside Matija Nastasic and Benjamin Stambouli.
In the current season, Sané was nominated for the starting line-up in five Bundesliga games, and he missed the opening game against FC Bayern due to injury. In the past season he already missed 16 competitive games due to an injury to his knee, after the restart in May, the season was already over for him personally in June. At that time, a torn hamstring forced him to take a longer break.
