The star of ‘Game of Thrones’ joins the team of superheroes that emerged from the comic book publisher in the mythological ‘Eternals’
Kit Harington (London, 1986) will always be the eternal Jon Snow, a character he played for eight seasons in the series ‘Game of Thrones’. This week, choose eternity from the Marvel Cinematic Universe by joining the superhero team created by director Chloé Zhao (‘Nomadland’) in the mythological ‘Eternals.’ From the quiet medieval warrior of ‘Game of Thrones’ fiction to Dane Whitman, in’ Eternals, Harington demonstrates his prowess for action movies. His character’s dynasty in ‘Eternals’ dates back to the medieval legend of King Arthur and the figure of the Black Knight, a hero connected to the cursed ebony blade, which bestows power and madness on all who use it. Dane’s future appearances in the MCU are a completely different matter, because the character is in limbo, awaiting public reception, although it is guessed that Marvel has future plans for Harington.
-Why did you decide to participate in ‘Eternals’?
-Who does not want to represent humanity, ha ha! I like Dane for his sense of humor, for the mystery he generates around him. I just hope his appearance in the Marvel universe doesn’t end here. It has been great to play a character who has something to say. It is a role that brings hope to the viewer from the moment it appears on the screen, because it is who introduces the film. If Marvel calls an actor offering an interesting character it is difficult to refuse.
-How did you get the character?
– Producer Nate Moore called me and then I had a meeting with Kevin Feige. They offered me the opportunity to participate in this film, but I did not accept immediately. It was later, when I met Chloé Zhao and I finished convincing myself.
-What does it mean for you to create a character from the physical?
-I like to change my body for my characters. Shooting ‘Game of Thrones’ made me a fan of the cult of the body and since then I have tried to take care of myself. ‘Eternals’ has been a demanding shoot, but I was prepared to do it. Dane is also a very philosophical guy who embodies the idea that nothing is certain, nothing is forever, and that is the first thing an actor learns in this industry.
-Do you like mythological stories?
-A lot, I’ve always liked them. I like to spend my time reading stories. As an actor I want to star in relevant, current, modern characters, but it is also wonderful to dive into the fictional world of superheroes, because they are part of current mythology. In addition, just the fact of being able to participate in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is already attractive in itself. It is exciting to be part of this group of superheroes.
-What would you highlight about the director Chloé Zhao?
-He has a different way of working than other directors I’ve shot with. He likes to be realistic, shooting outdoors looking for a deep dimension of the characters. I think she is a filmmaker capable of striking a balance between the action scenes and the message that the plot of the story requires. Marvel always has humorous, comedic moments in its films, scenes that change the tone of the film.
-Thanks to ‘Game of Thrones’ he became an international idol.
-It was wonderful, very flattering. However, my motivation when making professional decisions depends on the directors, the scriptwriters, the production team with whom I am going to work. I want to play roles that the public identifies with, that is what is truly important for any actor.
Kit Harington and Lia McHugh in ‘Eternals’.
-Does not use social networks.
-No, I’m terrible. I talk about myself enough in interviews to be nagging on Twitter or Instagram too. It seems boring to me.
-Why did you decide to become an actor?
-I wanted to investigate and learn about the lives of other people. I think that is the reason why everyone chooses this profession. It is an art in which you investigate human beings. It’s not about a certain genre, or being in the public eye and being famous, for me acting is a way of learning about myself.
-What kind of music do you like to listen to?
-I listen to all kinds of music in my car. The first genre is hip hop, the second rock, the third jazz, the fourth classical. It all depends on the moment and what I want to hear. I like the lyrics of the songs. Nick Cave is one of my favorite artists. Also The National and Archive.
