The early decisive conclave in Costa Navarino, this fabulous spa that appears to the Greek Mediterranean, an hour of Olimpia road, where Olympism was born almost three thousand years ago.

Entrepreneurs, managers, Olympic champions, bureaucrats, federative presidents, even princes heirs, men and women, all pro -men, discuss the future of boxing as an Olympic sport (unanimously, it is decided that it will continue in the Los Angeles’28 program). Or about the imminent conversations with Donald Trump and Marco Rubio, hosts of the 2028 Olympic edition. Or about Milan-Cortina d’A Ampezzo, the winter games next year.

Between meeting and meeting, Pau Gasol, executive member of the International Olympic Committee (COI), attends to special envoys.

From his heights, he tells us:

-This is a side of the sport that I had not lived so far, but it is equally influential as I knew. It is breathed in the environment, it is an extraordinarily decisive moment that will mark the future of Olympism for the next twelve years. And it is allowing me to understand what things happen and why …

It should be explained what Gasol is talking about: sitting on their desks, the prayers seem applied students. In silence, they listen to personalities that, successively, take the floor.

They listen and listen.

Or they seem to listen: as good students too, they are distracted with their things. They cross looks with the next partner, exchange messages on the mobile, close the last fringes: they parapet for the commitment that, definitely, has summoned them in the Peloponnese.

At the afternoon, the tenth Olympic Pope is voted.

The destination and why that Gasol speaks is written two hours later.

(In the interim and in the press center, Artem Kuznetsov, special envoy of Tass Agency, Russian agency, tells me that Shamil Karpischev, the only Russian member of the IOC, will possibly vote to Samaranch: “The Spanish candidate has businesses in Russia, just as he has them in China,” Kuznetsov pretends).

And now the conversations and forecasts are over: at four except ten, Greek time, Christophe de Kepper, general director of the IOC, asks the hundred p.sar who leave the room for a last break, orders them to deliver their mobiles to the ujieres and propose that they proceed to vote.

The heart of the seven applicants triggers for a long time, for the half hour that the plebiscite lasts.

The Blanca smoking stands after the afternoon and crown Kirsy Coventry (41) in the first round of voting: Coventry is winning ahead of Juan Antonio Samaranch and Sir Sebastian Coe (8), the other two names that abounded in the bets, after an exercise as unpredictable as massive. Six other candidates aspired to the position that the president has taken, the personality that will direct the gigantic world body over the next eight years (his position will be extendable for four more years, until twelve).

The result is decisive and fair. Coventry has drawn the choice with a lot of forcefulness and it is a good way to start a presidency “

Juan Antonio SamaranchCandidate for the Presidency of the IOC

-It is a forceful result. He admits no doubt. As I said so many times, if the members made use of their right to vote, they could not be wrong. The result is decisive and fair -says Samaranch, who will continue to be vice president until last year; It is since 2016-. Coventry has drawn the choice with a lot of forcefulness and that is a good way to start a presidency. For my part, I have spent many years in the Olympic family and I am at your disposal.

Coventry inherits the position of Thomas Bach (71), outgoing president, Ninth Pope (2013-2025), Olympic Florethe champion in Montreal 1976, the High Command that in these times has dealt with the 2014 Sochi crisis (the controversial winter games stigmatized by the state doping system prepared by Russia), the complex and corrupt Rio 2016 games (a good fan of Brazilian leaders today sleeps today in prison) and the controversial edition of Tokyo 2020, played in 2021, things in pandemic.

Somehow, Coventry, the first president in the history of Olympism, the first African president, is Bach’s heiress (the dad Outgoing had blessed her at the time), but she is also heiress of her time. In other times, the possibility of a lady would have never been raised to access such a position.

In the 131 years of history of modern Olympism, only another woman, Anita Defrantz, had aspired to the presidency (he had done so in the 2001 plebiscite, then resolved in favor of Jacques Rogge, Eighth Pope).
