Cult British novelist and director Alex Garland, who rose to fame for his novel ‘The Beach’, is preparing to shoot
The actress Kirsten Dunst, 39, will lead the cast of ‘Civil War’, a science fiction film prepared by the cult British novelist and director Alex Garland, who achieved fame for his novel ‘The Beach’, which was taken to the movies by Danny Boyle. Garland entered the world of cinema as a screenwriter for ‘Sunshine’ and ’28 Days Later’, both directed by Danny Boyle, and in 2012 he signed the script for the new adaptation of ‘Dredd’.
After her, Garland made his directorial debut with ‘Ex Machina’ (2015), a reflection on artificial intelligences, also a science fiction story for which he was nominated for an Oscar as a screenwriter, and continued with ‘Annihilation’ (2018), a film in in which a biologist signed up for a dangerous and secret expedition to a mysterious area where the laws of nature do not apply. His third feature film, ‘Men’ (2021), remains unreleased. It is a horror film starring Jessie Buckley and Roy Kinnear, which tells the story of a young woman on vacation in the English countryside after the death of her ex-husband, encountering the unexpected. Filming ended in May 2021 and its premiere is scheduled for 2022. The filmmaker also has an eight-episode miniseries, ‘Devs’, a metaphysical thriller also with fantastic content, with a dystopian vision of Silicon Valley, available on HBO Max .
Along with Kirsten Dunst, who has triumphed these months with ‘The Power of the Dog’, by Jane Champion, a work for which she could be nominated for an Oscar, Garland will have a cast that, according to the IndieWire portal, includes Wagner Moura ( Pablo Escobar in ‘Narcos’), Cailee Spaeny (seen in ‘Mare of Easttown’) and Stephen McKinley Henderson, who already worked with Garland ‘Devs’.
About ‘Civil War’ the only thing that is known at the moment is that it will be set in the United States in the not too distant future and that it will be an “epic action” story. Nothing more, although it seems that it will narrate a deeply divided country that falls into the conflict that has been predicted for it, although it is intuited that Garland will include that metaphysical touch, a trademark of all his productions. Garland himself also signs the script. A24 will handle the world premiere of the film, as well as finance and produce it alongside Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich of DNA and Gregory Goodman. This will be the third collaboration between Garland, A24 and DNA after those of ‘Ex Machina’ and ‘Men’, There is no start date for filming, although it will be imminent.
