Officials in Kherson, a Ukrainian port city that is under Russian rule, said on Friday that Russia was not allowing humanitarian corridors proposed the day before in talks with Kiev representatives. The measure provides for a temporary ceasefire for the evacuation of civilians and the delivery of food and medicine.
The region’s governor, Gennady Laguta, wrote on Facebook that Ukrainian authorities have prepared 19 trucks with supplies, but they have not yet been allowed in by the Russians, who “say they will provide humanitarian aid themselves”.
Also on Facebook, the mayor of Kherson, Ihor Kolykhaev, said that the Russians’ objective in not respecting the agreement is to pose as “good liberators”.
“Judging by everything, the ‘good liberators’ are preparing to ‘rescue’ Kherson. First, they took the situation to a critical point, and then they will heroically save us.”
