Nurmagomedov said that defending UFC champion Makhachev has grown a lot
Former champion of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Khabib Nurmagomedov assessed the defense of the lightweight championship belt by Russian Islam Makhachev. His words are quoted on the promotion page on Instagram (social network banned in Russia; belongs to the Meta company, recognized as an extremist organization and banned in the Russian Federation).
Nurmagomedov said that Makhachev has grown a lot. “It’s difficult to understand. When you get into the later rounds and go deep, it shows that you understand your body. You will learn how deep you can go into yourself. Not everyone knows about this, that there is always a place there,” he explained.
On the night of June 2, Makhachev defeated American Dustin Poirier in the main fight of the UFC 302 tournament. The Russian won by choke in the fifth round and defended the UFC champion title for the third time.
32-year-old Makhachev won the 26th victory of his career with only one defeat. 35-year-old Poirier lost his ninth fight in MMA, he has 30 victories. Another fight with his participation was declared invalid.
