When we heard last week that Nikita Mazepin would no longer be driving for Haas, there were a number of drivers who seemed to have a chance at the vacant seat. In the rumor mill that got going, we mainly heard names like Giovinazzi, Fittipaldi and maybe even Hulkenberg. Kevin Magnussen wasn’t on that list, but he ended up making it anyway.
The Dane had to leave at the end of 2020 after driving four seasons for the team. He filled his spare time with the IMSA SportsCar Championship, where he took the podium several times and even won once in his Cadillac DPi-VR prototype. We also saw him appear in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, in which he participated with his father Jan.
When he left, Magnussen indicated that he would now only drive in places where he could fight for the win. It is therefore all the more surprising that he agrees to the seat next to Mick Schumacher. “I was surprised to get the call from Haas, but at the same time I really liked it,” Magnussen says. “I was actually looking at other options, but the offer to race in Formula 1 again, with a team I also know well, I simply couldn’t refuse.”
Guenther Steiner said: “I am delighted to welcome Kevin back to the Haas F1 Team. In the search for a driver who can bring a lot of value and experience, he was the obvious choice.’
