Black Widow arrived at Disney + to cheers and criticism, and ended the long wait for fans to see the first film of phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. During his first weekend he managed to raise 218.8 million dollars, but the celebration of his success was overshadowed by a legal claim against Disney by Scarlett Johansson.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the simultaneous premiere of the film on the streaming platform and select cinemas broke the agreement that contemplated significant box office bonuses for the actress.
“Disney intentionally induced a breach of the agreement by Marvel, without justification, to prevent Ms. Johansson from realizing the full benefit of her deal with Marvel,” the lawsuit posits.
The complicated situation has not only angered fans of the actress and the franchise, but also the president of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, according to former editor of The Hollywood Reporter, Matt Belloni, in his special newsletter What I’m Hearing.
“[Feige es] a business man and is not prone to corporate confrontations or shouting. But they have told me that he is angry and ashamed ”, were the surprising revelations that further increase the controversy around the legal fight.
“He lobbied Disney against the launch plan for Black Widow, preferring the exclusivity of the big screen and not wanting to upset his talent. And then when the problem exploded, the movie started to sink and Johansson’s team threatened litigation, Feige wanted Disney to fix things with her, “he added.
Disney’s response to Scarlett Johansson’s lawsuit
The company was quick to speak through a representative for Variety: “There is no merit in this presentation. The lawsuit is especially sad and distressing because of its callous disregard for the horrible and prolonged global effects of the pandemic. “
“Disney has fully honored Ms. Johansson’s contract, and in addition, the launch of Black Widow on Disney + with Premiere Access has significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $ 20 million that she has received up to the date ”, he sentenced.
