Berlin, Germany.- The Kenyan eliud kipchoge broke this Sunday at the Berlin marathon his own world record running the distance in 2 hours 1 minute and 9 seconds. The world record was already in his possession since 2018 when he ran the distance, also in Berlin, in 2:01:39.
In 2019 Kipchoge even covered the distance in 1:59:40, but under special conditions, so that mark was not approved as a world record.
kipchoge ran today, from start to finish, at a world record pace. In the first kilometers he was accompanied, in addition to three hares that were ahead of him, the Ethiopians Andamlak Belihu and Guya Adola. The leading group passed the 5 kilometer mark at 14:15 and the 10 kilometer mark at 28:22.
Around kilometer 15, which the athletes passed in 45:20, Adola began to stay. The pace was devilish, even higher than predicted, and the passage through the half marathon was done in 50:51. At kilometer 25 the last of the three hares abandoned the race and Kipchoge and Belihu continued alone. Belihu began to stay and shortly after Kipchoge was alone in the lead.
The split times, 1:11:08 for the 25km and 1:25:40 for the 30km, were still clearly below the 2018 split records. kipchoge he had to do the kilometers that lay ahead of him alone, only an unlikely fainting could take away a new world record.
Even in some moments the barrier of two hours, only broken so far by the own kipchoge under laboratory conditions, it did not appear to be insurmountable. In the end, it was not enough, but that barrier seems closer and closer in an official competition.
