Superbike is back on track three weeks after the Donington round and the world fight is rekindled at the Assen circuit, which now sees Toprak Razgatlioglu ahead of Jonathan Rea, forced to chase for the first time in a long time. The Kawasaki rider, however, pays a gap of only two points in the general classification and at the end of the Dutch round he will want to return to command the championship again.
The historic Assen track will be the scene of the battle between the two title contenders, a fight that is renewed and to which the reigning champion arrives prepared. Rea boasts 12 successes at the ‘Cathedral’, the last of which obtained in 2018. The Kawasaki rider has not won any victory in the last edition disputed and aims to make up for this weekend, hoping to overtake Carl Fogarty, also with 12 triumphs on this track.
“I am very happy to return to Assen after his absence last year – Rea commented in reference to this weekend’s Assen round – It is a truly unique layout, a high-speed circuit, with fast corners and changes of direction. I’ve never had the opportunity to ride in the ‘real’ old Assen, but the modified version is incredible for me. It is one of the most beautiful and fluid circuits on the calendar ”.
“I have good memories there and the fact that there will be a lot of fans is an extra motivation, because Assen and the fans are a perfect match! I had some great battles in 2019 and can’t wait to do more this year. This is a favorable circuit for me and my bike, so I hope to be able to capitalize. The goal is to win, but we have to work in an intelligent and calm way to be in the best shape that allows us to be competitive ”.
Alex Lowes also arrives in Assen with great motivation, tackling this track for the first time on a Kawasaki. Having been absent from the calendar last year, the Briton will debut this weekend with the ZX-10RR. Despite having to learn to adapt to the track with the ‘new’ bike, Lowes has clear ideas and is already aiming for great results: “Assen is a fantastic track, one of my favorites on the calendar. Speaking like an English motorcycle enthusiast, we have always had a great closeness to the Dutch circuit ”.
“My first experience here was with BSB – he continues – It is also the circuit where I won my first Superbike podium, in 2014. Since we didn’t race here last year, this will be my first experience in Assen on the saddle. to the ZX-10RR. The goal of this weekend is to fight for the podium and have fun with my team ”.
