Kate Middleton has completed chemotherapy treatment and “with relief” announces that she is on the road to recovery from cancer. She does so today, September 9, 2024, with a video message, filmed by videomaker Will Warr in a family context, together with Prince William and their three children, George, Charlotte and Louis.
In the background, the princess’s voice tells how hard the last nine months have been not only for her, but also for her loved ones. “The road to healing and recovery is long”he clarifies but begins a new phase in which he will return to work and live with a “renewed sense of hope”.
The diagnosis and the announcement
It was March when the Princess of Wales announced that she had cancer and had started chemotherapy. She did it again that time with a video message, after weeks of speculation about her health. In fact, in the first days of 2024, she had undergone abdominal surgery in London: since then, the princess had not appeared in public and people around the world were wondering why she had undergone the operation and whether there had been any complications.
In the March video, filmed in the garden of Adelaide Cottage in Windsor, Kate Middleton revealed that the diagnosis had come as “a huge shock”. “In January,” she said, “I had major abdominal surgery in London and at the time it was thought that my condition was not cancerous. The operation was successful. However, tests after the operation found that I had cancer. My medical team then advised me to have a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.”
The first public outings
After that video message, in which she asked for time and privacy, she returned to take care of her health and, as had been happening since January, she did not appear in public until June. The occasion was the Trooping the Colour, the ceremony that celebrates the sovereign’s birthday. Wearing a white dress with black details, Kate had attended the ceremony and then greeted the British from the balcony of Buckingham Palace together with the rest of the family.
She later wanted to honor the tradition of awarding the winner of the men’s Wimbledon tournament: in July, wearing a purple dress, she attended the final between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz together with her daughter Charlotte and then presented the cup to the Spanish tennis player.
The video message: “Now I live each day as it comes.”
”As the summer draws to a close, I can’t explain what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment,” began the video message with which the Princess of Wales announced that she had finished the treatments prescribed for the cancer she had been diagnosed with. ”The last nine months have been incredibly difficult for us as a family.. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we had to find a way to navigate stormy waters and unfamiliar roads,” Kate Middleton explained.
”The journey of cancer is complex, scary and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you,” she continued. ”With humility, it also brings you face to face with your vulnerabilities in a way you’ve never considered before and, with that, brings a new perspective on everything,” she explained. Quoting her husband, Kate said that ”this time has reminded William and me above all to reflect and be grateful for the simple, yet important things in life that many of us often take for granted. Simply to love and be loved. Doing everything I can to stay cancer-free is now my focus. Although I have finished chemotherapy, My journey to healing and full recovery is long and I have to continue to live each day as it comes.”.
The Princess of Wales then announced her intention to resume her public engagements soon. ”I look forward to returning to work and resuming other public engagements in the coming months, when I am able. Despite everything that has happened, I enter this new phase of recovery with a renewed sense of hope and appreciation for life.”, she explained. ”William and I are so grateful for the support we have received and have drawn great strength from everyone who is helping us at this time. The kindness, empathy and compassion of everyone has touched me deeply,” she stressed.
Kate’s message concluded with a thought for cancer patients. “To all those who are continuing their journey against cancer: I remain with you, side by side, hand in hand. Out of darkness, light can come, so let that light shine.”
