Regarding the premiere on Telemundo of the second season of ‘La Reina del Sur’, the Mexican Kate del Castillo spoke with media from all over Latin America, via Zoom, where she told details not only about the series, but also gave some personal opinions.
“She (Teresa Mendoza) will always be the same, she doesn’t change much. Her hair a little, her way of dressing is simple because she comes from town. She has been refined as her life goes by, and if she has to go to an important place she will change, but she is still a simple girl, which will never be taken away from her”, defines his most popular character, to date.
“I always have to trust my instinct. I remember that I was afraid to go to Telemundo because at that time it was not a very big company and it started producing other things, but my instinct told me: ‘It is a character that you have pursued, a beautiful character’ and I wanted to do something completely different that would put women very high , that is strong and without knowing it was the success what was it You don’t always work on what you would necessarily like to work on. Many of us do not have the fortune to choose. For me it was a lesson in trusting your gut,” she recalls.

Do you see yourself more in your career with this character?
Yes, let’s see, this time is important because we are women of action. Since we are born because that is how we have to be to survive. So, I think he finally has a lot success, because I think women want to see a woman like that and reflect and look beautiful. And also men love to see a girl in action. Teresa is a woman of a certain age like me, she is not a ‘chavita’ (young) and that is also a father (well), because she gives her a lot character, it gives her a lifelong maturity, a life she never chose and that has taken her around and had to go on to survive, and she has done quite well. It is that resilience that she has and all women have.
Your parents (the famous actor Eric del Castillo and Verónica) have not wanted to be vaccinated. What do you think?
It is very easy to be on one side and be able to judge others. I am vaccinated twice; I have my way of thinking and my parents have theirs, and I’m not going to change them, because I can’t and believe me I’ve tried, but that’s the way it is. They don’t leave their house, they think they’re going to be fine, they don’t want to get vaccinated, they don’t want to get the bug, I also didn’t want to get vaccinated, because I said ‘why am I going to get a bug that I don’t have’. But personally I recommend that they be vaccinated, that is my position.
You will return to Mexico to work. How do you feel now that the newspaper El País published an article revealing the persecution against you?
Arely Gómez (the prosecutor who handled her case) continues to hold an important position in Mexico. In the Government the same people continue in the same positions, and now it turns out that Mrs. Arely is judge and party, so we continue with that. Everything about the persecution against me has already been published and I’m still fighting. We are in the fight and Arely would have to go out and face this.

What does Kate del Castillo want professionally?
I don’t want to pigeonhole myself into one gender. I have made many things. Tragedy, drama and now we are going to start shooting a modern version of Anna Karenina and I am happy because it is something different. It will be with my producer. Our first series for a platform that I can’t reveal yet and I’m moved to return with her to my country as producer and protagonist.
