ANSWER: “I’ve had a bit of a strange life. And I had a few things left to do. And one of these is this, being here. For me it is a dream to work with these people, but at 52 years old I am no longer moved by successes or failures. I have done good and bad things, like all human beings. And what is happening to me is a consequence of doing things well, of doing things with love. I think it is very nice to be an example. An example that dreams come true.”
Q: You changed your sex but continued acting.
A: “It’s just that the people who change in our lives don’t have to change everything. I don’t think there is any trans person in this world who, because they are trans, is more intelligent or more stupid. That is another of the important points in which there are to influence: trans people are normal and ordinary people, with our defects and our virtues. There is a very big social problem of wanting to sink certain minorities to the bottom of society. If you write the word trans in a social network. The only thing you get are insults and pornography, which is what they reduce transsexuality to. That’s why I don’t like adjectives nor do I like being labeled. “I already did what I wanted to do, I have a daughter who has two mothers.”
Q: How did you prepare for the role of the boss “Manitas”? How do you become a man again on screen?
A: “I’m not going to lie to you, for me working on the part of ‘Manitas’ was much more fun than that of ‘Emilia Perez’. Playing a Mexican drug trafficker, with a voice different from mine, and singing… seemed like a beautiful job to me.
(Jacques) Audiard didn’t want me to play the male character at first. I had to convince him by sending him videos and photographs for months, until one morning he called me and told me ‘the two characters are yours, leave me alone’ (laughs).
‘Manitas’ has something of John Rambo in it, which I love…”
Q: Like your character, you are a woman who still likes women. She is married, has a daughter… How are they living it?
A: “They are here, with me. Yesterday at the gala they were crying like muffins. My daughter is 13 years old. It has been a very difficult, very complicated path, especially for my wife. I met her when she was 18 years old in a nightclub in Alcobendas, imagine. But it’s wonderful what’s happening.”
