Karl Lauterbach is the new health minister in Germany – or is it? He seems to be missing in a picture after the appointment by the Federal President.
Berlin – It has been official since Wednesday, Germany has a new government with the traffic light coalition led by Olaf Scholz. At lunchtime, Federal President Steinmeier took the new ministers into office – so far, so normal. However, a group picture of the new cabinet is causing confusion. An important minister seems to be missing: Karl Lauterbach.
Karl Lauterbach is not the Minister of Health, is it? He seems to be missing in one picture
All department heads pose on it in two rows – with corona-compliant distance. In the middle stands Federal President Steinmeier, flanked by Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck. Other members of the government such as Christian Lindner, Annalena Baerbock and Cem Özdemir can also be recognized at first glance. But where is Karl Lauterbach? Isn’t he perhaps Germany’s next health minister after all?
If you look closely, you can see it: hidden behind Olaf Scholz, you can only see a pair of shoes in one of the photos. Like a shadow, Karl Lauterbauch has apparently placed himself behind the new Chancellor. But the all-clear, the SPD politician can be clearly seen from a different perspective. So the current health minister is called Karl Lauterbach.
Karl Lauterbach is hiding behind Chancellor Scholz: Twitter user has an explanation
A Twitter user promptly provided an explanation for the faux pas. The photographer’s positioning is to blame. Apparently he was not standing in the middle of the politicians, which meant that Lauterbach had disappeared behind Scholz. However, if he had positioned himself a little further to the right, Steffi Lemke (Greens) would no longer have been in the picture.
The cause of the problem is the lineup itself. Nine people have been placed in both the first and second rows – so there are only eight gaps between which the second row can sit.
So the picture always caused some laughs. But the federal government probably doesn’t have a long time to joke: The Prime Minister’s Conference will take place this Thursday, the pressure on Environment Minister Habeck to implement measures to meet the climate targets as quickly as possible – and Karl Lauterbach, who is in office, has to deal with the deal with the new Omikron variant.
