The Democratic candidate for vice president of the United States and governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz, was criticized for having mistakenly stated, in Tuesday’s debate (1st) against Republican JD Vance, that he had become a “friend of school shooters”. , when referring to families of victims.
“Look, I’m a hunter. I have firearms. The vice president [Kamala Harris] also. We understand that the Second Amendment exists, but our first responsibility is to resolve it for our children. I met with the parents of [escola] Sandy Hook. I made friends with school shooters,” Kamala Harris’ number two said when asked about her stance on guns.
In the Sandy Hook school massacre on December 14, 2012, a 20-year-old mentally ill man shot his mother while she slept, then went to his old school and killed 20 children and six teachers.
Vance, Walz’s direct rival in the November 5 elections, used a rally this Wednesday (2) to add his voice to the criticism that this comment received.
“He said he’s friends with school shooters. And that was probably only the third or fourth dumbest comment he made. I have to be honest, I feel a little bad for Governor Walz, and the reason is that he has to defend the indefensible, the balance of Kamala Harris,” he said in Auburn Hills, in the important state of Michigan.
The Republican campaign went further by exploiting Walz’s speech. “What the hell was Governor Walz talking about? What exactly did he mean? If he misspoke, he had ample opportunity to offer clarification during the pizza stop after his humiliating performance [no debate]. But he didn’t,” the campaign said in a statement.
Walz’s explanation was given on Wednesday before a rally in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where he said that in that statement he actually meant that he had befriended family members of victims of school shootings.
