The vice president of the United States and Democratic candidate for the White House, Kamala Harris, is leading a public fight with her opponent in the November election, Donald Trump, and the governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, both from the Republican Party, due to to the federal government’s response to the hurricanes that devastate the country.
The “extremely dangerous” hurricane Milton, category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, increased in size this Tuesday (8) as it approached the west coast of Florida, where it is expected to hit the Tampa Bay region on the night of Wednesday, reported the United States National Hurricane Center (NHC).
The NHC warned in its morning bulletin that “today is the last day for Floridians to prepare” in their homes or retreat to designated regions if directed to do so by local authorities.
Since the start of the Atlantic hurricane season, nine have formed: Beryl, Debby, Ernesto, Francine, Helene, Isaac, Kirk, Lesley and now Milton.
This Monday (7), a report from NBC News pointed out that DeSantis did not answer Kamala’s calls to discuss the response to hurricanes in Florida.
“Moments of crisis, if nothing else, should be the time when anyone who calls themselves a leader says they are going to put politics aside and put people first,” said the Democrat.
According to the website Politico, DeSantis stated that he did not know that the vice president was trying to contact him.
“I didn’t know she called. I’m not sure who they called. They didn’t call me. It wasn’t anything anyone in my office did [recusar as ligações]in terms of saying it was something political”, added the Republican.
Later, the White House reported that President Joe Biden was able to speak with DeSantis about the recovery work after the passage of Helene and preparations for the arrival of Hurricane Milton.
Last week, Trump had accused the Biden administration of diverting resources from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema) for other purposes instead of helping those affected by hurricanes in the United States.
“They stole the money from Fema, as if they stole it from a bank, so they could give it to the illegal immigrants they want to vote for them [democratas] in the election,” Trump said at a rally in Saginaw, Michigan.
Kamala stated that the Republican’s statement was “irresponsible” and that a lot of “misinformation is being disseminated by the former president about what is available, in particular for Helene survivors,” he said, referring to the hurricane that hit the southeastern United States. States at the end of September and caused more than 200 deaths and US$38 billion in material damage.
