Unfortunately, today, May 24, 2024, we wake up to terrible news, since it has been announced that Kabosu, the dog behind the meme “doge”, has died after 14 years of fame on the internetthus leaving a hole that seems impossible to fill.
Atsuko Sato, the owner of Kabosu, revealed this sad information on her personal blog, noting that After two long years fighting leukemia and liver disease, the beloved dog passed away in his sleep. This is what he commented:
“She passed away silently, as if she were asleep while I caressed her.
I think Kabo-chan was the happiest dog in the world. And I was the happiest owner.”
Although Kabosu’s actual age is unknown, Sato specified that his dog lived to be 18 years old, something unusual for a shiba inu.. In 2010, two years after adopting her, her owner took a photo of her while she was sitting on her couch with her legs crossed. This image went viral shortly after, and is currently remembered as one of the most popular memes in history.
Kabosu’s story goes beyond the meme, since a couple of years ago this image became an NFT and eventually the Dogecoin coin, a cryptocurrency with a market capitalization of $23 billion, which is supported by stars like Snoop Dogg and Elon Musk. In November of last year, a statue of Kabosu and his sofa valued at $100,000 was unveiled in a park in Sakura, crowdfunded by Own The Doge, a crypto organization dedicated to the meme. On related topics, we also recently lost one of the actors from The Lord of the Rings.
May he rest in peace, Kabosu.
Author’s Note:
It’s a shame that this kind of thing happens. As a multiple dog owner, I know all too well the feeling of losing someone who has been by your side for much of your life. While the internet will not forget Kabosu, the pain that Atsuko Sato surely feels is very great.
