Recently, it was revealed that Justin Roiland, co-creator of rick and mortyand responsible for High on Life, has been accused of domestic violence committed against an ex-girlfriend.
According to NBC News, who obtained records from the Orange County Superior Court, the Orange County District Attorney filed a criminal complaint against Roiland in May 2020. The complaint accuses Roiland of:
“One felony domestic assault with bodily injury and one felony false imprisonment for threat, violence, fraud, and/or deception.”
At the time, Roiland was arrested and released on $50,000 bail in August 2020., and pleaded not guilty to both charges in October of that same year. As a result, a protection order was filed in October 2020, stating that Roiland may not harass, threaten, monitor, or come within 100 feet of his ex-girlfriend, whose name is unknown while being protected by the order.
Along with this, Roiland relinquished ownership of any firearms in his possession. This order is valid until October 2023. As if that were not enough, the co-creator of rick and morty appear in court on Thursday for a pretrial hearing.
At the moment there is no official response from Adult Swim, Roiland’s representative, or Squanch Games, and It is unknown if this will have any impact on the future developments of the studio, or on the following season of rick and morty.
