Tilman Kuban will soon give up the presidency of the Junge Union, and he is about to arrive in the Bundestag. There is no longer a short line to the Chancellery.
Dhe Junge Union has to work harder than before if it wants to make itself heard. After all, it is no longer the youth organization of the Chancellor’s Party. “It’s just a different time,” says JU chairman Tilman Kuban. He will give up the presidency at the Germany Day in autumn, at the age of 35 he will be too old for the JU. The North Rhine-Westphalian state association recently nominated its chairman Johannes Winkel. So far there are no opposing candidates.
Meanwhile, Kuban has to make it to the Bundestag, to which he was directly elected in September. He has to go from being a speaker to being a specialist politician. “There are two hearts beating in my chest,” says Kuban, who is interested in economic and foreign policy issues. He is pleased that he can get involved in both the Economic and European Committees. At the end of last year, when no one saw the Ukraine war coming, Kuban became the Union faction’s rapporteur on Ukraine. He actually wanted to go to Ukraine from February 20 to 23, but canceled the trip because of the security situation.
