The Court of Appeal granted leave to appeal in respect of the man’s loss of earnings.

The man had ended up in a taxi rank with another wordy man in August 2020. In the scent of the dispute, the man spat at his partner on the chest and face a couple of times.
The other party to the dispute took the matter to court and demanded a verdict of defamation from the saliva. In addition, the man claimed compensation for the loss of earnings, as he had had to be absent from work for ten days because of what had happened.
Helsinki the district court found the man guilty of defamation in the case. As a punishment, the man received a 20-day fine, which accrues 120 euros to be paid.
In addition, the man was ordered to compensate the victim for 2,500 euros in loss of earnings. The district court’s judgment does not provide further information as to why the man who was the subject of the spitting had to be absent from work for ten days after the act.
Saliva had applied for leave to appeal to the Helsinki Court of Appeal.
In its decision on Thursday, the Court of Appeal granted leave to appeal only in respect of the amount of compensation. The defamation sentence received by the man therefore remains in force.
