Judgments The International Court of Justice ordered Uganda to pay compensation to Congo for the war that took place a couple of decades ago

The amount of compensation was only a fraction of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s claim.

UN the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Wednesday ordered Uganda to pay compensation to the Democratic Republic of Congo for the war that took place a couple of decades ago.

The amount of damages awarded by the court was $ 325 million, or about $ 284 million. The decision was only a fraction of Congo’s claim of $ 11 billion, or about $ 9.6 billion. Congo claimed compensation for the devastating conflict of 1998-2003.

Most of the compensation Uganda has decided to pay for deaths, injuries and sexual violence. In addition, compensation is paid for property damage and damage to natural resources and nature. During the conflict, stolen, which is used to make phones and computers, and other raw materials were looted from the Congo.

The ICJ acknowledged that Uganda was to blame for a “significant proportion” of the victims of the war. However, judges said Congo did not have sufficient evidence of the deaths of 180,000 civilians on which Congo sought compensation.

“The court finds that the evidence presented to it suggests that the number of deaths for compensation in Uganda will fall from 10,000 to 15,000,” the chief judge said. Joan Donoghue.

The ICJ relied on the figures of the UN and experts in making the decision. However, Donoghue added that there is no detailed evidence available of certain events during the devastating war in remote areas a couple of decades ago.
