The Colombian Juan Sebastian Munoz sealed a week that he will never forget, in his debut in the Presidents Cup. To the point and a half that he had achieved together with the Korean Sungjae Im in the duels in pairs, he added, this Sunday, a very noisy victory.
Muñoz defeated the number one in the world, the American Scottie Scheffler, by 2/1 (two holes ahead against one to play) to give one more point to the international team, which, however, at this time loses the title against the United States.
This is how Muñoz beat the number one in the world
The Bogota native started losing on hole 1, to even the match on hole 3 and then went down two on holes 4 and 6.
But Muñoz excelled and won three holes in a row, 8, 9 and 10, to take the lead, and on 12 a curious fact occurred: both the Colombian and Scheffler scored eagles. On the 15th, Muñoz made a birdie to win the hole.
Scheffler did not give up and won the 16th, but Muñoz responded with a great birdie on the 17th to win the hole and the point for the international team.
Muñoz had already stood out in duels in pairs
After resting the first day by decision of captain Trevor Immelman, Muñoz had shown signs of good play on Friday, along with Im. That day they tied against Scheffler and Sam Burns, in a duel in which the Colombian contributed five birdies to maintain parity.
On Saturday, Im and Muñoz scored a great victory against Tony Finau and Kevin Kisner, by 3/2, in which the Colombian, once again, showed a high level: it was he who put the international duo in front with his first birdie on the 4th hole. Another birdie on the 8th by Muñoz gave him back the advantage that he would never lose until the end of the match.
Muñoz’s birdies on the 12th and 13th (this one from more than 10 meters) gave him an advantage of 3 up and then the Colombian hit two excellent shots on the 16th hole that left the American duo without a chance.
With the duels now over, the United States team is up 14.5 to 9.5.
