The Dominican artist, an icon of Latin music, beat heavyweights like Shakira, Karol G and Resident to take the gramophone for best album, and he has already won 28 Latin Grammys throughout his career.
Jorge Drexler won another of the most coveted awards of the night, that of song of the yearwith “Collapse.” During the prelude to the awards, held in the afternoon, the Uruguayan had already won the award for Best Song by Singer-songwriter for the same song.
The Colombian Carlos Viveselected «Person of the Year» by the Latin Recording Academy, was in charge of starting the gala with a medley of his greatest hits.
“Fresh Fruit”, “The Land of Oblivion” or “Pa’ Mayté” made the spectators at the Kaseya Center in Miami dance. The Florida city, home to a large Latino community, vibrated with a three-hour ceremony.
Other big winners of the night were Edgar Barrera and Nathy Pelusowho conquered three gramophones each.
The American of Mexican origin, who led the number of nominations in this edition with nine, won prestigious awards such as producer of the year and songwriter of the year. After this edition he now has 24 Latin Grammys.
The Argentine Nathy Peluso won, for her part, the prizes for best long form music videofor the best alternative song with “The day I lost my youth” and for the best rap or hip hop song with “Aprender a amar.”
For this last song, Peluso shared the award with the musician and producer Pablo Drexler, son of Jorge Drexler.
Natalia Lafourcade, the most awarded female artist at the Latin Grammys, took home a gramophone as co-writer of the Best Pop/Rock Song, “5 Hours Less,” with the Argentinian Conozando Russia. With this, the Mexican already has 18 awards from the Latin Recording Academy.
At the gala, artists such as the Brazilian Anittathe Mexican Carin Leon or the Argentine rapper Thunderin addition to international stars such as Jon Bon Jovi, who presented the “Person of the Year” award to Carlos Vives.
Multi-award winning stars such as Alejandro Sanz, Gloria Estefan and Juanes took the stage to present awards.
The Chilean singer Mon Laferte won the award for Best Alternative Music Album for “Autopoietica”, and the Colombian Ela Taubert was designated Best New Artist.
In this quarter-century edition, the Latin Grammys include a new genre, electronic music, and debut two categories: Best Performance of Latin Electronic Music and Best Album of Contemporary Mexican Music.
The awards are granted by a vote of the members of the Latin Recording Academy for works published between June 1, 2023 and May 31, 2024. Selected works must have at least 60% of the lyrics in Spanish , Portuguese or another regional language.
