The success of ‘The 47’ has put back on the map to Baró Torrea labor neighborhood raised brick brick by its own neighbors in the early 50s. It has been achieved since then, but still waiting for an implication … determined from the City Council to fix its multiple problems. Because the film ends well, but that is what separates the reality from fiction, that reality never ends.
The majority of neighbors were amazed by the tape of Marcel Barrena. Some 900 neighbors went to the premiere of the film in the Aribau cinemas and the emotion ended with an ovation of more than two minutes. However, the film does not reflect the perpetual suffering of its neighbors or the forgetfulness of the institutions about their circumstance. «The movie is very pretty. We loved it, but it does not reflect even half of the problems we suffer by building this with sweat and blood, ”says Elisenda Martínez, a neighbor of Torre Baró who has been in the neighborhood for more than 70 years and that arrived in the first wave of immigrants that They started building their houses on the mountain.
Three problems: access, supplies and education
Of the three problems that the film reflects, that is, the difficulty of the accesses, the deficiency of the supplies, and the lack of schools, has not really arranged any. Now there are paved streets, but access difficulties persist. He bus that comes above It is 183. Then, for neighbors who still have to upload more, they have a minibus to which they can call and ask for the service. «People are very friendly and know us. He greets us. They are lifelong and the relationship is perfect. If you do not look for problems, here you will not find any, ”says one of the three drivers who perform the 183 service and that are the heirs of Manuel Vital.
Carmen Vila, the woman of Manuel Vitalhe said in the film that schools are not needed to meet the vocation of teacher. And that is what she suffered all her life. «My sisters and I went to their catechesis classes. It was very dear in the neighborhood, ”says Sarai Domínguez, third generation of a family that has always lived in Torre Baró. «I lived nine years in Meridian city, but I returned here right now. In the neighborhood we all know each other and there is quality of life. There are neither the noise and nor the massification down there, ”he says.

His daughters now go to a school two kilometers from his house. Like her, so much progress has been made. Being a teenager he had to climb the same slope of eleven percent on foot with the food still in his throat. «Three years ago they put the minibus, but it is still without anything. There are no stores, there are no bars, there are neither banks or zebra crossings. I went down to my daughter with the cart and had to stay every time a car came, ”says Domínguez.
The issue of supplies is still more poor. This summer ran out of light up to five times. In November 2024, a new electric transformer was installed with the idea of improving supply stability and reducing the frequent cuts of light. The truth is that the neighborhood needs many reforms and currently the only active work is that of a future viewpoint. “The neighbors have many more priorities than a viewpoint,” says Domínguez.
Even with all their problems, they are a cohesive neighborhood. The vast majority are descendants of the neighbors who raised the first houses. It is so abandoned by the hand of God that there is no risk of gentrification or Migratory globalization. «In this neighborhood you enter the neighbor’s house and you don’t have to say or good morning. As there are no stores, if you need an tomato, you ask the next door. You have no other, ”says Domínguez.
The real problem is that most houses, built in the 50 yearsThey do not comply with what would be the habitability card, so the neighbors do not get works permits to fix and adapt their homes. In addition, the City Council forces to pay 20 percent of everything you spend on materials. Therefore, most have no choice but to do everything clandestine. In addition, as most deeds are in the name of relatives, not from the current tenants, this hinders all paperwork. For example, if one year they do not pay the IBI, families have no right to pay the past and the City Council could expropriate the plot and throw down the house.
Political disaffection is clear in the neighborhood. Many feel abandoned. There is the circumstance that in the last municipal elections Vox achieved its best data in Torre Baró. It was the second most voted force, with 16 percent of the votes. The “Charnego” pride and the feeling of abandonment by the City Council of the PSC made many neighbors decide to vote for the extreme right party.
The neighborhood is the second with a lower average per capita income from all over Barcelona, with just 8,699 euros. In total, there are 2939 neighbors and many live that political disaffection with resignation by feeling abandoned by a town hall that, despite what it could seem in the film, continues to look the other way. Participation in the last elections did not even reach 41 percent, making the vote of punishment against Colau Primera and Collboni policies later.
Torre Baró is today a bubble neighborhood outside the hustle and bustle of the rest of Barcelona. «When we arrived, we had nothing at all, so the fight was continuous. Now it’s time to give way to youth and be she who continues, ”he said Manuel Vitaldeceased in 2010. Who will take over vital? The neighborhood knows well that today does not need solitary heroes, but a strong and cohesive group of neighbors and an accomplice town hall that takes Torre Baró to the future.
