Eleven international organizations that fight for press freedom signed this Thursday, May 2, the “Declaration of Santiago + 30”, a statement that addresses the new challenges that journalism faces in the face of political, social and technological challenges.
At the meeting, organized at the Catholic University of Santiago de Chilethe entities that participated in the signing discussed the same agreement, “The Santiago Declaration”, signed in 1994 and which had to be updated in accordance with the new challenges of journalism.
On this occasion, the motto of the “Declaration of Santiago + 30” was based on the commitment to a free press, vibrant public discourse and the flourishing of democratic societies in Ibero-America and the Caribbean.
Thirty years ago, the issues agreed upon in the agreement were related
with the development of media and democracy in Latin America and the Caribbean. In the new meeting, One of the key slogans was journalism in the face of the environmental crisis.
This statement arises in the environment of the meeting convened by UNESCO to celebrate World Press Freedom Day and the content of the meeting will be presented this Friday, May 3, in a series of conferences organized by UNESCO, entitled “Perspectives on how to update the Santiago Declaration to new times.
Entities such as the Inter-American Press Association, the World Association of News Editors, the Committee to Protect Journalists, the Colombian Association of Information Mediaamong other media associations from countries such as Spain, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Ecuador.
Finally, “The Santiago + 30 Declaration” asks States, intergovernmental organizations, technology companies, media and journalism in general to “assume a collaborative effort that consolidates free expression as a fundamental human right and cornerstone of democratic and informed societies.”
For their part, technology companies were asked to make their content moderation policies transparent, combat misinformation and respect copyright laws; while the media and journalism in general were asked resist censorship, self-censorship and undue influence, as well as uphold the principles of quality and transparency.
