Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp said striker Diogo Jota will miss the Community Shield match against English Premier League champions Manchester City on July 30 due to a muscle injury.
Jota injured his hamstring with Portugal last month, and missed Liverpool’s 4-0 friendly loss to Manchester United in Thailand on Tuesday, as part of pre-season training, as a precaution before the problem escalated in the middle of the week.
On the possibility of Jota and goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who is also recovering from an injury, participating with the FA Cup champions, Klopp told reporters, “Alison has a chance against City, but Diogo does not.”
The German coach, whose team beat local rival Crystal Palace 2-0 on Friday in Singapore with goals from Jordan Henderson and Mohamed Salah, added that the Brazilian goalkeeper’s abdominal injury is not serious.
He continued: We are preparing for a full season, so he can train, but not in the usual way, but he is preparing for the season and does not waste time. There is no danger but care must be taken as the rest of the season is longer than the start.
Midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain left the Palace match with a muscle injury, while defender Joe Gomez was absent as a precaution.
