José Miguel Pérez, former vice president of the Canary Islands Government, dies

This Monday, November 18, the historic socialist leader José Miguel Pérez died, at the age of 67.

In his political career, Pérez became vice president of the regional Executive and Minister of Education in the legislature from 2011 to 2014 in the Government chaired by Paulino Rivero (Canarian Coalition).

His political career began in 2003, when he headed the candidacy for the Gran Canaria Council for the PSC-PSOE after being elected secretary of the PSOE in Gran Canaria. After this appointment with the polls, he became a councilor of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria until 2007, when he was elected president of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria.

He was always a member of the PSOE of the Canary Islands, where he held the position of general secretary of the party at the regional level.

Pérez had a degree in Philosophy and Letters, a doctor in History from the University of La Laguna (ULL) and a professor of Contemporary History at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC).

The PSOE of the Canary Islands has mourned the death of Pérez in a tweet in which it noted that he was an “excellent colleague and an outstanding public servant. “Forever in memory.”

The Minister of Territorial Policy and current Secretary General of the PSOE of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, has also dedicated some emotional words to him in X. “He was a generous and fair politician, who helped me a lot. I will be infinitely grateful to him.”

The president of the Canarian Government, Fernando Clavijo (Canarian Coalition), has also regretted the death of the historic socialist leader and has sent his condolences to friends, family and colleagues of Pérez through X.

From Nueva Canarias, the president of the formation, Román Rodríguez, has also expressed his condolences for the death of the former socialist leader, who he highlighted was “committed to democratic memory and public education.”
