Author of one of the greatest classics in the history of Brazilian literature, My Lime Orange Footwriter José Mauro de Vasconcelos would have turned 102 on February 26th.
Launched in 1968, the story of little Zezé, who learned to use his imagination and storytelling skills to survive in a violent environment, has already won the world. The work, exclusive to Melhoramentos, sold more than 2 million copies in Brazil alone, where it had 150 editions in the most varied formats. Outside the country, it has had a formidable career: it has been translated into 15 languages (including Turkish, Korean, Catalan and Mandarin) and published in 23 countries. In Japan and Korea it won a manga (comic book) version.
The first time the work was adapted for the cinema was in 1970, a feature film directed by Aurélio Teixeira. He also appeared on television in three soap operas: one on Rede Tupi (1970) and two on Rede Bandeirantes (1980 and 1988). Recently, the eponymous movie just entered the Netflix catalog. The cast includes names like José de Abreu and Caco Ciocler.
There are many reasons to remember this best seller by Editora Melhoramentos, which enchants, excites and brings a little bit of each of us.
