The Jordanian Ministry of Interior said that investigations into the incident confirmed that “the shooter is a Jordanian citizen named Maher Diab Hussein Al-Jazi, a resident of the Al-Hussainiya area in Ma’an Governorate.”
The ministry added that Al-Jazzy “was crossing the bridge as a driver of a cargo vehicle carrying commercial goods from Jordan to the West Bank.”
She stressed that “initial results indicate that the incident was an individual act,” noting that “investigations are ongoing to reach all the details of the incident.”
The ministry said, “Coordination is underway between the relevant authorities to receive the body of the perpetrator of the operation for burial in Jordan.”
She also confirmed the release of all Jordanian drivers who were investigated after the accident, as “more than 100 trucks returned to the Kingdom in succession on Sunday.”
The ministry indicated that “the concerned authorities are also following up on the closure of the bridge after the incident,” noting that Israeli sources said that it will be opened on Monday.
What happened?
- A gunman from Jordan killed three Israeli civilians at the King Hussein Bridge crossing in the occupied West Bank on Sunday before being shot dead by Israeli security forces, Israeli authorities said.
- This is the first attack of its kind on the border with Jordan since October 7, 2023, when Hamas led an attack on southern Israel, which launched a devastating attack on the Gaza Strip that is still ongoing.
- Officials said the attack took place in an Israeli-controlled commercial goods area where Jordanian trucks unload goods bound from the kingdom to the West Bank.
- The crossing, known in Israel as the Allenby Bridge, is located north of the Dead Sea and approximately halfway between Amman and Jerusalem.
- Family members of the attacker said he was 39 years old and from the influential Huwaitat tribe in southern Jordan.
- The Israeli military said: “A terrorist approached the Allenby Bridge area from Jordan in a truck, got out and opened fire at Israeli security forces operating on the bridge.”
- He added: “The security forces killed the terrorist, and it was announced that 3 Israeli civilians were killed as a result of the attack.”
- “This is a difficult day. A hateful terrorist murdered three of our citizens in cold blood,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.
- Israeli President Isaac Herzog urged all parties to investigate the incident to prevent its recurrence.
- Head of Hamas’s political bureau abroad, Sami Abu Zuhri, praised the attack, describing it as a response to the Israeli attack on Gaza.
- He said: “The King Hussein Crossing operation is a natural response to the Israeli war crimes of genocide against the people of Gaza and a new form of the nation’s involvement in the confrontation. Unless the occupation stops its crimes, we expect that it will face many more examples of this.”
