With the majestic background of the pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, of the archaeological zone of Teotihuacan, Jonatan Montoya began his journey to try to go around the world on foot.
Effusive, brave and determined, this Wednesday was the first day of the next seven years, in which, with nothing more than his luggage and an app on his cell phone, the 31-year-old left from Teotihuacan hoping to reach the Orient in 2028.
“Today I will walk approximately 15 kilometers. I decided to leave this point because it is my favorite place in the Mexico’s valley, the mysterious Teotihuacan He brings me here two or three times a year with my best friend, “he said in an interview with MILLENNIUM.
His goal is to walk 80 thousand kilometers and visit seven wonders of the world, leaving for Puebla, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Campeche and Mérida, where will you visit Chichen Itza; later it will go down to Peru to go Macchu Picchu; then El Cristo Redentor, in Brazil; then he will go to Europe, where he will walk to Italy to be in the Roman Coliseum; then he will move to the desert of Jordan, to the archaeological city of Petra, to India by the Taj Mahal and will finally reach the Chinese wall.
As part of his training, he walked up to 12 kilometers from the Historic Center of Mexico City to Campo Marte, carrying a backpack of 11 kilos. His idea of becoming the “Mexican Forrest Gump“It arose on September 15, 2020 during the health emergency due to covid-19.
“I couldn’t sleep and the question arose: what would you do if you didn’t know that you were going to fail or if you weren’t afraid of anything? Six and a half months into the pandemic made me realize that I had been in a very large comfort zone for five years, “he said.
In addition to fulfilling his dream, the also a dancer, yoga teacher and broadcaster, wants to help the fight HIV through the app Charity milles, which turns each step into support for different foundations.
Although he does not have sponsors yet, he has already started receiving messages from other travelers who intend to join his ambitious adventure. He hopes that with his documented experience of the next six months he can attract brands.
“I have already started receiving messages from other travelers, from people who would like to join my route at another time. I do not doubt that at some point a brand will want to join this adventure, “he said.
However, this “sacrifice” brought with it leaving his family and his partner with whom he had been in a relationship for 16 years and living together for six years. Now the memory of that love is a necklace with a key pendant which he will bring in the form of an amulet.
“The first time I went on a trip without my partner, who left for a month, he gave me this chain to remember him. Since he gave it to me, I have not taken it off and I plan to take it with me until the end, “he said.
MILLENNIUM accompanied Jonatan during his first hours of travel, where he ran into the first obstacles: a path full of bushes with a river of sewage in the center that makes it impossible to cross directly to Otumba, State of Mexico.
“This is the first dead end I’m going to find, despite the fact that my map said otherwise. There is no clear path, so I am going to go back a few streets to find a better way, “he said.
For the great journey that awaits him, he tattooed a standing plant with wings, a symbol of the god Hermes, protector of travelers. For now, your luggage includes only a tent, a sleeping bag, a change of clothes and a simple kitchen kit. If you have enough funds, you will spend at least one night a week in a hotel to bathe, recharge your electronics and wash your clothes.
“I got the tattoo about two weeks ago, it’s still healing. I am delighted, thinking how I am going to continue it ”, he pointed out.
