British Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed Sunday that Russia is preparing for “what could be the biggest war in Europe since 1945”, as Western fears of an imminent Russian invasion of Ukraine mount.
“All indications are that the scheme somehow started,” Johnson said in an interview broadcast by the BBC.
He added that, according to “the intelligence we have,” the Russian invasion will take place not only from the east, but also from the north, from Belarus, with the aim of “encircling Kiev”, the Ukrainian capital, “as (US President) Joe Biden made clear to a number of us,” according to Johnson.
“People should realize the cost of this in terms of human lives, not only from the Ukrainian side, but also from the Russian side,” he said.
During the Munich Security Conference, the British Prime Minister called on Westerners to unite and stressed the “shock” that a Russian invasion of Ukraine would leave on the world, noting that the sanctions that Britain would impose on Russia if it attacked Ukraine would make it “impossible” for Moscow to reach London financial markets.
For his part, Secretary of State for European Affairs James Cleverly estimated the Russian invasion of Ukraine as “very likely and very imminent.”
“But we continue to work to try to avoid that,” he told Sky News Sunday. In his interview with the BBC, Johnson outlined possible sanctions that would be imposed on Russia.
“We will prevent Russian companies from raising money in Britain’s markets and we will prevent them, along with our American friends, even from dealing in sterling and dollars,” he added.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Group of Seven stressed that it would adopt coordinated financial and economic sanctions “on a wide range of targets, both companies and individuals, that would impose an unprecedented and heavy cost on the Russian economy.”
