Peacemaker is a success and John Cena shines as the vigilante, but the path to get the starring role was not easy. Before getting the leading role, the actor tried several times to approach Marvel Studios Y DC Movies without much success.
During the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he revealed that he wanted to play Cable in Deadpool 2 and even Shazam. Additionally, he explained how he ended up getting involved in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.

“I can’t tell you how many superhero roles I’ve been turned down for. There were some in the Marvel Studios universe, but I was rejected. But you know, I kept trying. I think like a child, so Shazam was very interesting for me. And when I read the script, many times, like… This is the thing, I don’t just chase: I want to do this! I always have to read it.”
As for how James Gunn convinced him to participate in The Suicide Squad, he said that the director was the only one with a free pass due to his reputation as a storyteller. “He just doesn’t give up, he scratches every piece, and I know it’s going to be good, because he starts from a blank page and that’s it,” he said.

Despite his confidence in the filmmaker, the actor stressed that he reviews what he will do. “I always read the story to make sure that one, I like, and two, it falls within my skill set. I want to challenge myself, but I don’t want the first time I do something to be on screen for a paying customer. I want to practice and perform at a level that is quality for the consumer.”
