US President Joe Biden turns 79 today and it is very unlikely that he will run for the leadership of the White House again. When her term expires in 2024, she will be 82. So, on her birthday, the Wall Street Journal reflects on Democrats’ concerns about a future that could see Kamala Harris running for president despite her growing unpopularity. Questioning Biden for his age was taboo during the presidential campaign, when the only goal of the Democrats was to “ exploit him to evict ” Donald Trump.
But voters and Democrats themselves now see the White House tenant’s fatigue in meeting all the commitments he or she undergoes. According to a recent Harvard-Harris poll, 58 percent of voters believe Biden is “too old to be president,” including 27 percent of Democrats. Meanwhile, 53 percent of voters “doubt” that they are “mentally fit to serve” as president, including 16 percent of Democrats.
The Wall Street Journal then quotes Jimmy Carter, now 97, recalling that in 2019 he said: “if I was 80 I don’t think I could do the tasks I had when I was president”. Kamala Harris, however, doesn’t seem convincing as an alternative. The newspaper says that “its approval rating is on its way to the center of the Earth,” citing a poll that put it at 28 percent. White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki defended Harris saying that criticism of her is tinged with sexism and racism “because she is the first woman, the first woman of color” to serve as vice president.
