They cut one of the traffic lanes to build wider sidewalks and a bike path, and 126 trees have been planted
Jerónimo Santa Fe Avenue, one of the main arteries of the city, opened to traffic yesterday after ten months of works for its comprehensive renovation. The elimination of one of the vehicle traffic lanes in the Andalusian direction has made it possible to build wider sidewalks in order to give priority to pedestrians. A bike lane has also been set up and 126 trees have been planted on the new sidewalks, of the hibiscus and melia species.
To improve traffic regulation, a roundabout has been created at the intersection of the avenue with Martín Morata street, the parking spaces have been eliminated and only the loading and unloading areas have been maintained. The supply, sanitation and rainwater services have been comprehensively renovated and high energy efficiency double luminaire streetlights have been installed.
The Minister of Development, José Ramón Díez de Revenga, and the mayor, Diego José Mateos, supervised the results of the works that have also extended to some of the adjacent streets such as Rambla Baja, General Pérez Chuecos, Higuera, Carril de Cañete, Crossing Zenete, Fray Diego de Cádiz and Robles Vives. They have had a budget of 2.4 million euros financed by the regional government with loan funds from the European Investment Bank (EIB).
There are only auctions left on the pavement and the placement of urban furniture, scheduled for the next few days
The City Council has been in charge of the execution of the works that, according to the mayor, are 94% finished and only “small finishes of the pavement” and the placement of urban furniture that will be carried out in the coming days remain. The bike path will be completed during the first week of January. The Minister of Development said that “we continue to advance in the new Lorca, taking firm steps to complete the reconstruction after the earthquake.” He added that the urban regeneration works in the neighborhoods “are shaping a much friendlier, more livable and pedestrian-friendly city.”

The counselor announced yesterday that the Community Governing Council has authorized the contracting of the improvement works for the RM-C9 and RM-503 regional highways, which converge in the district of Zarzadilla de Totana. This action has a tender budget of 2.8 million euros and will include the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of both regional roads, as well as the improvement of its routes and the widening of its lanes to 3.5 meters .
