The rotation policy of the four Spanish circuits that the MotoGP promoter wanted to introduce in 2022 will be postponed for another year: the provisional calendar that was announced last week included all four traditional rounds of the World Championship.
On Tuesday, Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta was in Seville with Juan Marin, vice president of the council and minister of tourism, regeneration, justice and administration, to sign the contract for the Spanish Grand Prix on May 1, 2022. , with an agreement that Jerez will also host the event in 2023. However, Marin himself warned that the 2024 race is not insured.
“There is enormous competition from other circuits, it is true that we had to adapt to this circumstance and we have guaranteed the races of 2022 and 2023. If there is the possibility, there will also be that of 2024. In otherwise, we will jump to 2025 “, said Marin in the statements reported by Diario de Jerez.
With these statements, the Andalusian politician made it clear that the rotation policy of the Spanish circuits announced by Dorna and postponed due to the pandemic could start in 2023.
Ezpeleta, for his part, added that “there are good prospects, there is a huge demand for Grands Prix in other countries, but for the moment the expectations we have set with the Andalusian council to move forward have been met” .
The Jerez Circuit has hosted the World Championship since 1987, always under the name of the Spanish Grand Prix, except in 1988 when it hosted the Portuguese Grand Prix. Jerez hosted two races in the pandemic year, 2020, with the Andalusian Grand Prix. 2023 will therefore be the 37th year of uninterrupted presence of the World Championship on the Andalusian track.
The circuits of Valencia, Aragon and Barcelona will face the same risk of entering the rotation of the Spanish circuits when they negotiate their respective renewals with Dorna.
