DAccording to media reports, US President Joe Biden’s spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, is about to leave the White House and move to MSNBC. Numerous US media such as the news portal “Axios”, the news channel CNN and the “New York Times” reported on Friday that the 43-year-old will soon give up her job as presidential spokeswoman.
According to “Axios”, Psaki, who recently tested positive for the corona virus for the second time, is currently in exclusive negotiations with the left-leaning news channel MSNBC. She is said to moderate an MSNBC program on the Peacock streaming portal of the parent company NBCUniversal and appear in other MSNBC programs. The former spokeswoman for Biden’s deputy Kamala Harris, Symone Sanders, had already signed a contract with MSNBC after leaving the White House.
No comment from the White House
CNN reported that Psaki will remain in office until the traditional April 30 White House Correspondents’ Dinner. According to media reports, CNN also wanted to secure the services of the Biden spokeswoman.
The White House declined to comment on Friday’s reports of Psaki’s move to MSNBC. “Jen is here and working for the President every day to give you the answers to your questions and that is her focus.”
Psaki had always made it clear that she only wanted to do the strenuous job of presidential spokeswoman for a limited time. Last May she said she wanted to remain in office for about a year and then have more time with her children.
Psaki has been chief White House spokeswoman since Biden took office in January 2021, explaining and defending the US President’s policies. Among other things, she reintroduced the daily press briefings in the White House, which had been abolished under Biden’s predecessor Donald Trump. The 43-year-old had already held important communications posts during the tenure of then-US President Barack Obama, including as communications director at the White House and as spokeswoman for the State Department.
A switch to television is not unusual for speakers of the White House. Former Trump spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany now works for the conservative Fox News news channel, while Trump’s first spokesman, Sean Spicer, has a show on the far-right Newsmax channel.
