“The 4xe is Jeep’s 4 × 4”. Marco Pigozzi, Senior Brand Manager of the Stellantis brand has no doubts in defining the technology that characterizes Compass, Renegade and Wrangler as the true expression of the off-road vehicle according to the American company. A sensation that we had the opportunity to put to the test during an off-road test drive dedicated to the electrified range of the brand, led to dirty tires and bodywork at the Crossodromo del Ciglione di Malpensa. From the best sellers already mentioned, also passing through the new e-Hybrid versions with the light hybrid arrived in March 2022 once again on Compass and Renegade, up to the pure Gladiator, which has remained faithful to endothermic.
To confirm the position of the Jeep manager and the impressions he had behind the wheel on the ups and downs of the Milanese dirt track, there are also the numbers that the electrified range has been able to record from 2020 to today and in particular in the first half of this year. . In fact, from January to June all three 4xe models were able to consolidate their position and in some cases reach the top of their segment, such as Jeep Compass 4xe which became the best-selling model among the LEVsor Jeep Renegade 4xe which is first in the B-SUV segment among all Battery Electric Vehicle and Plug-In Hybrid models, and second overall behind Compass, while Wrangler 4xe is third in its D-SUV segment since the beginning of the year. .

However, our experience began with the new Compass e-Hybrid, first on the road and then off-road: the light hybrid of the Stellantis brand has shown that it can have its say even where there is no asphalt, with the version equipped with a 4-cylinder 1.5-liter engine with 130 HP and 240 Nm of maximum torque, combined with an integrated 48 volt 15 kW electrical unit (20 HP) which delivers 55 Nm of torque. Working on the application of the different specific modes for off-road vehicles and passing from Mud to Auto and even in Snow, we were able to notice how the intervention of the electronics makes the adaptation of the car to the different set-ups almost imperceptible, while guaranteeing a different response of the accelerator pedal, adjusted so that you never have to force too much. In this way, tackling a steep climb or a bump, even stopping and then starting again, becomes really easy even if it is a front-wheel drive car.
But if the Compass feels good, everything becomes damn simple when you get behind the wheel of the Wrangler 4xe. The spiritual heir of Willys enjoys a specific electrified powetrain, consisting of a 2.0 turbocharged petrol engine, two electric motogenerators, a 17 kWh battery pack. (400 Volt) and the TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. The system produces a total of 380 hp and 637 Nm of maximum torque. The first electric unit is located in the front and can work both in conjunction with the petrol engine and as a high voltage generator while the second motor generator is located on the transmission, generating traction force and allowing energy recovery during braking. The Wrangler 4xe can travel in full electric guaranteeing a range of 50 km. Also in this case the proposed exercises continue without any difficulty, overcoming every obstacle without ever forcing too much.
The extreme grip offered by the car is impressive despite the tires worn on the occasion of this off-road test were not specific for off-road. Our off-road experience also continued behind the wheel of Renegade and finally of Gladiator, the largest of the Jeep family: electrification has not yet arrived here, with the high-performance pick-up of the Stellantis brand that has demonstrated all its capabilities by balancing the dimensions and the important step in the best possible way, an element to always do pay attention especially on a mixed route such as the one approached near Malpensa. Whether it’s a 4xe or a light hybrid, however, the feeling is always the same, Jeep was able to find the right alchemy between the need to evolve and pursue the path of transition towards sustainable mobility and the desire to remain faithful to one’s own. of DNA, a result achieved thanks to a technology that looks to the future.
