Jean Claude Van Damme He is one of the most famous action stars in cinema. Her time in Hollywood left behind iconic films, such as “Double Impact”, “Timecop” and the legendary “Bloody Contact”, in which she shared roles with the legendary Bolo Yeung, another milestone in the action and martial arts genre. However, the Belgian actor was about to be part of the successful saga “Predator”.
Released in 1987, “Predator” starred arnold schwarzenegger and before long it became a huge pop culture event. While the Austrian played the older Alan ‘Dutch’ Schaefer, Van Damme was going to be his alien opponent.
Why wasn’t Jean-Claude Van Damme Predator?
By the time that “Predator” was in production Jean Claude he was practically a stranger, so it wasn’t a ‘sin’ that he was under a full body suit. But it was just this detail that made him desist from joining the cast.
“They put me in my mouth like a tube (to breathe). I was covered in that plaster for at least 20 minutes. It was very hot. My friend told me, ‘If you can’t breathe, just (move) your finger and I’ll take that away.’ And I did it. I started to panic. And they said, ‘No! Five more minutes!’” he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2019.
Not only was it uncomfortable for him to be in the uniform, but it could also create risks for him because the suit was made of rubber and the shooting had a jungle background, where the terrain was uneven and there were high temperatures.
“When Joel (Silver, the producer) asked me to jump, I knew it was going to be bad. I told him, ‘This is impossible, Joel. I think we’re going to have a problem.’” Thus, he ended up getting fired from what could have been one of the biggest roles of his career.
