TOKIO (dpa-AFX) – The President of the Japanese Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games in Tokyo rejected doubts about the alignment because of the corona pandemic in a New Year’s address. “If I am trapped in my thoughts, shrink back or have any doubts in my head, that would affect everything,” said Yoshiro Mori on Tuesday in a New Year address addressed to 3500 employees. He added, “We have to persevere.”
Preparations for the games will continue as planned. In a recent poll, around 80 percent of the Japanese were in favor of the Tokyo games being canceled or postponed again.
The Olympic Games and Paralympics were supposed to have taken place last summer, but were postponed to this year due to the corona pandemic. They are scheduled to open on July 23rd. Japan is in a relatively good position in terms of infection rates in an international comparison with around 4,000 deaths. But another significant increase in new infections has forced the government to declare a state of emergency for the second time in the Tokyo area. It is initially valid until February 7th. In the meantime, other regions, including Osaka, are calling for the state of emergency to be expanded./ln/DP/stw
