The Cabinet said that the law on tax incentives in the Kuril Islands is contrary to the position of Japan
Hirokazu Matsuno, Secretary General of the Japanese Cabinet of Ministers, said that the law on tax incentives for new organizations registered in the Kuriles, signed by the Russian president, runs counter to Japan’s position. Writes about it RIA News.
According to the Secretary General of the Cabinet, the attraction of Japanese companies and companies from third countries contradicts Tokyo’s position on the territorial issue of the northern territories and the subject of discussions of joint Japanese-Russian economic activities.
On September 3 last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking at the World Economic Forum, announced that a special tax regime for business would be created on the Kuril Islands. Under it, companies will be exempt from taxes for ten years. The head of state noted that both Russian and foreign investors would be able to take advantage of these tax and customs benefits.
Russia and Japan cannot sign a peace treaty following World War II because of a territorial dispute over the southern part of the Kuriles. Japan considers the islands of Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and the Habomai group of islands to be its “northern territories”. Moscow does not recognize the very fact of the territorial dispute.
